Some verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive. Sometimes there is no difference in meaning sometimes there is. The following verbs can be followed by a gerund or an infinitive and there is no difference in meaning.

He began, started, continued, liked, loved, preferred, hated, couldn't stand to read/reading.

Some verbs can be followed by either an infinitive or a gerund but their meanings are NOT the same.
I will remember to buy her a present. (I won't forget)
I remember buying her a present. (I recall buying it)
I regret to say that he has left. (I am sorry I must tell you)
I regret saying it. (I am sorry I said it)
I stopped to have lunch at American Style. (I interrupted an activity)
I stopped having lunch at American Style (I no longer go there)
